Invitation from the Conference Chair

Dear Colleagues and fellow scientists,

I am pleased to announce that the 2020 Joint Fall Meeting of the TSAPS, TSAAPT and Zone 13 of the Society of Physics Students (TSAPS) meeting will be hosted November 12-14, 2020 at UT Arlington. Due to the situation of COVID-19, we have decided to hold the conference online. As the chair of the organizing committee, I would like to cordially invite you to participate the conference as a speaker or as an attendee.

The features of this meeting are:

  1. It is a virtual meeting; all presentations are delivered virtually online.
  2. No registration fees, all attendees are free of charges.
  3. 9 keynote speakers and 6 of them are National Academy members and experts in a wide variety of fields (Prof. Nygren in High Energy Physics, Prof. Coleman in Quantum Materials, Prof. Zank in Space Physics, Prof. Datta in Nanostructures, Prof. Long in Optic, Prof. Sham, Materials). Profs. Kotov, Cooley and Ren are rounding out the group of distinguished keynote speakers. We are very proud to have such a select group of speakers this time.
  4. Awards will be provided to the best of student presentations (up to 15).

Physics, as a fundamental science, benefits mutually when closely connected to hot areas such as, but not limited to, nanotechnology, topological insulators, block chains, big data and new applications. These connections between physics and the other numerous areas of science and engineering can be enhanced via meetings like TSAPS, and as such, physics can keep fostering more and better connections with these and other communities. TSAPS has encouraged and strengthened collaborations statewide, nationwide and even worldwide. Collaboration continues to be an extremely important key for success, and this will help our students to broaden their perspectives and muster up the courage to, individually or cooperatively, face challenges and solve problems in the worldwide community.

TSAPS was established in 1982, and the objective of the Section is the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics in the Texas area. Based on the records of the TSAPS meetings, we expect to have more than 300 attendees at our conference. We have carefully designed our TSAPS meeting to achieve similar goals as described above. The major attendees are students – graduates, undergraduates and even many high school students from local schools. We also coordinated with the Society of Physics Students, the Society of Women in Physics as well as the Texas Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers to help organize this meeting, and all attendees have free registration.

I would like to thank the TSAPS administrators and the leadership of UT Arlington, particularly the Physics department Chair Dr. Alex Weiss and the Science Dean Dr. Morteza Gholi Khaledi for their supports. I am also very grateful to the committee members who have been working with me on planning this meeting. I could not make this happen without their help and support.

I wish everyone will enjoy and benefit from this traditional and intriguing get together!

Sincerely yours,

Weichen with publications
